About Elaine

Ever wonder what you get when you cross a cook, a computer scientist and a latent chemist? In the case of Elaine Remez you get a soap maker.

Elaine was born and raised in Southern California where she got her degree in Math at UCLA and went on to become a computer scientist. She worked at TRW where she was a computer software architect specializing in discrete event simulation. She enjoyed the challenge of being involved with projects like the Hubble Space Telescope, the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (tracks space objects such as the Shuttle) and the Space Station.

Elaine retired from TRW in 1988 and moved to Santa Barbara where she became involved with charity work and started enjoying her creative side making ceramics. She finally arrived in Nevada City in 1997 where she hopes to be forever.

In describing how she became involved in soap making, Elaine says “I came to the time of my life where I needed HRT and started using a hormone cream which I rubbed on. It worked wonderfully. I learned that our skin is a conduit into our body and it is important what we use on it. I looked at the labels of the commercial soaps I had always used and saw a long list of chemicals. I decided that I wanted to treat myself and my loved ones to toiletries that were healthy. When my sister came down with a rash and couldn’t use ordinary soap I was determined to concoct a special soap for her which would be moisturizing, healing and protect her skin. I researched the properties of the different oils and butters that go into handmade soap and formulated “Shari’s Special Soap” for her. Next, I formulated a soap which would get my grubby gardening hands cleaned up and moisturized. I was on my way. My sister Wendy told me that she loved the idea of giving my soaps as gifts but just soap wasn’t enough for a gift basket so I started exploring other toiletries. I was intrigued with beautiful scents, colors, bottles. I went onto the Internet looking for recipes and scoured books. I found a bath salts recipe I loved. I formulated a night lotion and a day lotion. I made glycerin soap with little animals in it for my grandchildren and they loved them so much they insisted that my daughter take all the other soap out of their bathroom.

I don’t want to grow into a big business where I lose control of my creativity. I want to make great toiletries with loving care for people to enjoy.”
